After series of meetings and political maneuverings, indication emerged on Monday that the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress would meet before December 25 and convince party members on the need to extend the tenure of the party’s National Convention Planning Committee for sixth months.
AbujaCityJournal, reported on Monday November 9, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, Mai Mala Buni and some leaders met secretly in Abuja last week and concluded on shifting the goal post for the convention.
According to AbujaCityJournal sources, by Monday afternoon, the committee, had finally concluded and convinced a few power brokers on the need to tarry awhile before organising the party’s national convention.

Recall that the APC NEC at its meeting in the Presidential Villa on June 25, 2020, dissolved the Adams Oshiomhole National Working Committee and set up a panel headed by the Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni.
According to the decision reached at the NEC meeting and the constitution of the party, the Buni-led interim committee has a six-month tenure within which it is expected to organise a national convention, where substantive leaders of the party will emerge.

A senior party member confirmed to our correspondent on Monday that time is needed to fix some broken bones within the party before they could hold national convention.
“As things are with our great party, it will be difficult to hold the national convention now because a lot of things needed to be put in place. As at the time this committee was coming in, we didn’t envisage what was on ground but few months after, they have been able to table before us all that have gone wrong,” the source stated.
Meanwhile another source in the party has dismissed the extension as a ploy to take over the entire party structure. “The intent of the group is to seize the party from the ward level to the national level. Buni was quoted to have declared confidently recently that they would do so and no one can do anything about it.
Unable to stomach the vituperations of the interim leader of the committee, Senator Ita Enang from Akwa Ibom State, who was invited to represent the South-South at the meeting, was said to have challenged him.
Enang was quoted to have told Buni that as a Chairman of a national party; he should not be caught speaking the way he spoke.
“The Executive of the party from Ward level to State is elected for four years and it will be illegal for you to dissolve them”, Enang, a Lawyer by profession, had stated.
Buni asked him not to bother himself. The Caretaker Chairman then listed the names of four northern lawyers, all Senior Advocates of Nigeria, who, the acting chairman said have been engaged and penciled down to fight the case.
“If it will take us to pay judges we shall have our way”, Buni said to the chagrin of some of the people invited for the meeting.
The source however revealed that another round of the meeting has been scheduled for the coming weekend.
Meanwhile, #TheCable has reported on Sunday that Kabiru Marafa, a former senator representing Zamfara central, has advised Buni, to organise a convention or quit.
Buni’s committee was inaugurated in June after a leadership crisis ensued in the party.
In response to the crisis, the party’s national executive committee (NEC) dissolved the national working committee (NWC) led by Adams Oshiomhole, former APC chairman.
“Don’t overstretch your luck, we are not afraid of you. Many of us are aware that your appointment is unconstitutional, [section 17(iv) of our party’s constitution is very clear]. We only kept quiet because of the respect we have for Mr President, and the belief that the party needs to open a new page,” he said.
“Be informed that any action you take outside your primary mandate of organising a mini convention that will usher in a new set of executives will be null, void and of no effect whatsoever. You have up to December to do the needful or we chase you out.
“Your state needs you more than the party, go and administer your state, you can’t be governor and chairman of APC at the same time it’s unconstitutional.
You equally can’t accuse Chief Oshiomhole of any wrongdoing, because you were part and parcel of all the decisions he took. If there is any mess in APC today, you are part and parcel of it.
“We are eager to witness the emergence of a responsible leadership, a leadership we all can trust, a leadership that will carry every member, every section, every tribe along, not the type that leads by deceit and lies.”
Marafa asked Buni to focus on Yobe which he claims is in more crisis than the APC.
“Your state, Yobe, is in deeper crisis than APC. The state needs you more than the party, emulate your senior brother and colleague in Borno. Your agenda will collapse in a similar way the ones before yours collapsed,” he said.
