The Truth About Self-Care

Admin 25-Mar-2021 parenting_with_amanda

You know the in-flight safety instructions so well that you could probably say it from memory. One of them being: “put your oxygen mask on first,” before helping others.

Why is this an important rule for ensuring survival?  Because if you run out of oxygen yourself, you can’t help anyone else with their oxygen mask. If you die, you can’t help anyone else.

Self-care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health. Especially during times of stress.
Without this, it won’t be long before you’re burned out and operating in a mental fog. A point where it’s difficult to care about anything or anyone.

As parents, having a family is a huge responsibility on its own. When you add school runs, paid employment, a business, or other responsibilities, the stress level just increases.
Being able to de-stress and relax will help keep you in a sound mind and in good health.

Get intentional about incorporating into your life, the little things that you enjoy. Things that make you smile, relax, believe in the goodness of life.

There's a misconception that self-care is expensive. It does not have to be. Yes, a day at the spa may be pricey, but self-care could be as simple as taking a walk or having a really good laugh.
Here are a couple more self-care ideas;
Getting a massage,
Taking yourself out
Painting your nails
Getting a pedicure
Gardening
Dancing
Journaling
The list of possible self-care activities is endless. Try to find something that you love to do just for you, so that you can get into yourself, relax and re-focus. It doesn't matter what you choose, what's important is how you feel when you are done. You should feel refreshed, rested, positive, willing to give tomorrow another try.
