The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzor has chided those behind the purported court order stopping the 7th Triennial National Delegates Conference of the union scheduled to hold from October 3 to 5, 2021 in Umuahia, Abia State describing it as a joke taken too far.
Isiguzor said it was ridiculous and absurd for those people to think that they can get through the backdoor with what they could not get through a normal democratic process.
He disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists shortly after a visit to the Secretariat of the FCT Council of the union in Abuja.
It would be recalled that the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) sitting in Lagos while ruling on a motion filed by Soji Amosu and Ayokunle Ewuoso, Chairman and Secretary of Ogun State Council of NUJ respectively had restrained the credentials committee and others from going ahead with the election scheduled to hold at Umuahia.
But while speaking on the court order, Isiguzor said the court only gave 14days to address the issues surrounding the election noting that as of today Tuesday, September 14th 2021 there was no court order anywhere stopping the election of the union.
He said as law-abiding citizens they respected the rule of law and shut down all the activities concerning the election in compliance with the order of the court.
According to Isiguzor ” Some of our colleagues felt that they needed to exercise their freedom of expression went to court in Lagos seeking that the election is stopped until the issues surrounding the election are addressed and the judge clearly gave fourteen days that the purported order should last and of course, as law-abiding people, we have respect for rule of law.
“You know that the hallmark of democratic governance is respect for rule of law and we said let’s shutdown and respect order of the court.
“Ordinarily as NUJ President, I was not restrained in that purported order. The National Secretary was not restrained.
It’s just that they picked some members of the electoral committee even though they didn’t capture their names properly but we didn’t want to rely on technicalities. We said let’s respect the rule of law and move on”.
He explained that it was the unanimous decision of the National Executive Council (NEC ) the highest decision making organ of the union during their meeting. Abuja that the election is taken to Umuahia following the bidding by the Abia State Council.
The President added that there was no objection or opposition from any member to the decision of Abia Council to host the triennial delegates conference.
