This decision is a landmark one rendered by the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), sitting in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The unanimous decision was delivered by Justices Gberi-B\u00e9 Ouattara, Sengu M. Koroma, and Ricardo Cla\u00fadio Monteiro GON\u00c7ALVES on Tuesday, in response to an application brought before the court by Adeyemo. The court declared that the government of Benin must ensure the payment to Adeyemo within three months from the date the judgment is delivered, with a directive to report back to the court with evidence of payment.<\/p>\n<p>The application, marked ECW\/CCJ\/APP\/15\/22 Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) vs. Republic of Benin, challenged Igboho&#8217;s arrest and detention in Benin Republic on July 21, 2021. The legal team representing Adeyemo included Tosin Ojaomo, Aderemilekun Omojola Esq., Dr. Janet Fashakin Esq., and Irene Aclombessi, who represented the Republic of Benin.<\/p>\n<p>The court documents obtained by Vanguard outlined the orders sought by Chief Adeyemo, including an expedited procedure for his imprisonment and release, immediate and unconditional release with his Nigerian passport pending litigation, and suitable orders as deemed fit by the court.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday Igboho&#8217;s arrest occurred on July 20, 2021, alongside his wife, Ropo, in Cotonou, Benin Republic, at the request of the Nigerian government. This followed his escape from Nigeria after a joint operation by the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS) raided his residence in Ibadan on July 1, 2021.
