Umahi revealed that President Bola Tinubu, acknowledging the dire condition of roads since assuming office, has been committed to implementing plans for consistent and innovative road infrastructure development across the country. The recent approval stems from the 2023 Supplementary Budget of ₦300 billion for the Ministry of Works, comprising ₦110 billion earmarked for prompt palliative works and ₦200 billion for the continuation of inherited ongoing projects, as well as a few critical new road projects.

“Mr. President has directed that works in those palliative projects must be commenced before 1st December 2023, while observing all due process,” stated Engr. Umahi, emphasizing the urgency and adherence to procedural requirements.

To ensure accountability and transparency in project execution, the Minister announced a comprehensive audit directive for Directors of Works in the 36 States and FCT, as well as the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA). This audit is to encompass equipment both on and off sites, personnel of contractors, project status, financial details, challenges faced, and the percentage of work completion. The deadline for this audit is set for 30th November 2023.

Expressing gratitude for President Tinubu’s directive to continue inherited projects from past administrations, Engr. Umahi highlighted the government’s commitment to the use of asphalt and concrete pavement in road infrastructure. He affirmed that this policy would persist, as long as it complies with existing laws. Addressing critics, he emphasized that those demarking the policy were acting against the nation’s interests, advocating for the use of domestically sourced bitumen rather than imported, adulterated alternatives.

“As at today, most of the ongoing projects are still ongoing with asphalt pavement in line with this new policy while some are redesigned on concrete pavement, depending on the terrain and with full understanding of the affected contractors of those projects,” concluded Engr. Umahi, underscoring the government’s determination to enhance road infrastructure in the country.

The Federal Government has sanctioned N110 billion for immediate palliative measures on roads in all 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a significant move aimed at correcting the nation’s appalling state.
