Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga, represented by Majority Leader Hon. Sir Thomas Dugeri, said climate change is already affecting Benue through unpredictable weather and disruptions to agriculture, the state\u2019s economic mainstay.<\/p>\n<p>He described the bill as a critical step toward building a resilient and sustainable future, urging farmers, business owners, community leaders and development partners to make meaningful contributions.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed Benue State Climate Change Law, 2026, provides a framework for carbon budgeting, establishment of a State Council on Climate Change Secretariat, promotion of low greenhouse gas emissions and integration of climate action into development planning.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also sets long-term targets to achieve net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2070 and will apply to all ministries, agencies and private entities in the state when enacted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ade Iyamoye\u00a0 The Benue State House of Assembly has held a public hearing on the Climate Change Bill currently before the House, seeking stakeholders\u2019 input to strengthen the proposed legislation.
