The Senate has said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), currently lacks the capacity to conduct electronic voting, stressing that electronic transmission of results should not be confused with full e-voting.<\/p>\n
Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, chairman of the Senate ad-hoc committee reviewing the 2026 Electoral Bill, made the clarification on Thursday during an interview on Arise News amid controversy over provisions on result transmission and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).<\/p>\n
Adegbonmire said real-time transmission of results would only be possible under a full electronic voting system, which Nigeria has not adopted.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor now, INEC does not have the capability for e-voting. Maybe in two or three years, we can adopt e-voting. But as of today, INEC has not put an e-voting system in place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that IReV is not an e-voting platform but a portal used to upload results already counted manually and declared at polling units. According to him, presiding officers first complete Form EC8A and then upload the signed results to IReV.<\/p>\n
The senator dismissed claims that the Senate rejected IReV, describing the controversy as misinformation. He added that whether the bill uses the words \u201ctransmit,\u201d \u201cupload\u201d or \u201ctransfer,\u201d the process remains the same.<\/p>\n
Adegbonmire also cited logistics and network challenges, particularly in hard-to-reach communities, as reasons for avoiding rigid timelines for uploads. He warned that delays between declaration and online appearance could trigger allegations of manipulation.<\/p>\n
The comments come days after the Senate approved electronic transmission of results to IReV, while retaining manual collation as a backup in the event of technical issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
