{"id":82621,"date":"2026-02-11T05:59:28","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T05:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=82621"},"modified":"2026-02-11T05:59:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T05:59:28","slug":"senate-revises-electoral-act-restores-electronic-transmission-of-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2026\/02\/11\/senate-revises-electoral-act-restores-electronic-transmission-of-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate Revises Electoral Act, Restores Electronic Transmission of Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Adenike Lawal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Senate has reversed its earlier position on the Electoral Act amendment, moving to reintroduce provisions allowing the electronic transmission of election results from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission\u2019s (INEC), Result Viewing Portal (IREV).<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers took the decision during an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, agreeing to amend the Act to accommodate electronic result transmission.<\/p>\n<p>However, the provision comes with a condition: where internet connectivity fails, the manual result sheet, Form EC8A, will take precedence as the primary document for result collation.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment does not make electronic transmission compulsory. Instead, it allows results to be uploaded electronically where network coverage is available, while retaining manual collation as a fallback in areas with poor or no internet access.<\/p>\n<p>The reversal followed a motion moved by the Senate Chief Whip, Sen. Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North), urging the chamber to rescind its earlier rejection of electronic transmission.<\/p>\n<p>He said the adjustment was necessary to align the Electoral Act with public expectations and strengthen confidence in the electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Sen.
