{"id":82282,"date":"2026-01-29T06:50:41","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T06:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=82282"},"modified":"2026-01-29T06:50:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T06:50:41","slug":"court-sets-dates-to-conclude-emefiele-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2026\/01\/29\/court-sets-dates-to-conclude-emefiele-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Sets Dates to Conclude Emefiele Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Huldah Shado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has fixed ten hearing dates to conclude the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over charges linked to the naira redesign policy.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Maryann Anenih fixed the dates on Wednesday following an agreement between counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), and Emefiele\u2019s counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN).<\/p>\n<p>The trial is scheduled to continue on February 3 and 10, April 1 and 2, May 11 to 14, and June 9 and 10, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said the dates were set to ensure the conclusion of the case, which began in 2024, and urged both parties to avoid delays.<\/p>\n<p>At the resumed hearing, an EFCC operative, Emere Chinedu, told the court that the Presidency under late former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the naira redesign.<\/p>\n<p>He said the approval, communicated in writing, included a directive that the redesigned notes be printed locally.<\/p>\n<p>According to the witness, this condition contradicts claims that the notes were printed abroad during Emefiele\u2019s tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges in suit number FCT\/HC\/CR\/264\/2024, will continue his trial on February 3, 2026, for cross-examination of the EFCC witness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Huldah Shado A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has fixed ten hearing dates to conclude the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over charges linked to the naira redesign policy.
