{"id":82015,"date":"2026-01-22T10:41:58","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T10:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=82015"},"modified":"2026-01-22T10:41:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T10:41:58","slug":"fct-natives-seek-abuja-state-propose-gwagwalada-as-capital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2026\/01\/22\/fct-natives-seek-abuja-state-propose-gwagwalada-as-capital\/","title":{"rendered":"FCT Natives Seek Abuja State, Propose Gwagwalada as Capital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Patrick Idowu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A coalition of indigenous groups and residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has renewed calls for the creation of Abuja as Nigeria\u2019s 37th state, proposing Gwagwalada Area Council as its capital.<\/p>\n<p>The demand was made on Tuesday at the inaugural meeting of the FCT Stakeholders\u2019 Assembly held in Gwagwalada, where speakers described the agitation as a collective struggle against systemic marginalisation, rather than an ethnic conflict.<\/p>\n<p>President of the Assembly, Aliyu Daniel Kwali, said the choice of Gwagwalada was deliberate, describing it as the historical and cultural headquarters of the proposed State of Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Assembly was united in its resolve to secure statehood for the FCT, stressing that the struggle was rooted in structural and economic exclusion embedded in Nigeria\u2019s political system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur struggle is not against ordinary Nigerians but against constitutional and administrative frameworks that exclude us from meaningful participation,\u201d Kwali said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Assembly, a non-profit and non-partisan civil society group, is committed to advancing the civic and constitutional rights of FCT natives and residents, while promoting collaboration with non-indigenous settlers.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Rev. Barr.
