{"id":81917,"date":"2026-01-20T08:32:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T08:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=81917"},"modified":"2026-01-20T08:32:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T08:32:18","slug":"abuja-stadium-set-to-take-%e2%82%a624bn-from-nscs-%e2%82%a6203bn-allocation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2026\/01\/20\/abuja-stadium-set-to-take-%e2%82%a624bn-from-nscs-%e2%82%a6203bn-allocation\/","title":{"rendered":"Abuja Stadium Set to Take \u20a624bn from NSC\u2019s \u20a6203bn Allocation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rehabilitation of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, is expected to gulp \u20a624.642bn from the \u20a6203.603bn allocated to the National Sports Commission (NSC), in the 2026 appropriation bill.<\/p>\n<p>The allocation is part of Nigeria\u2019s expanded 2026 sports budget, which rose by about 300 per cent from \u20a678bn in 2025, following President Bola Tinubu\u2019s presentation of a \u20a658.18tn \u201cBudget of Restoration\u201d to the National Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The increased funding targets infrastructure renewal, athlete development and participation in major international competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Budget details show that \u20a618.775bn is earmarked for the first phase of rehabilitation of the stadium\u2019s main bowl, \u20a65.8bn for the completion of a high-performance centre, and \u20a665m for internet bandwidth via fibre optic and LAN\/WAN connectivity at the stadium and other national sports facilities.<\/p>\n<p>An additional \u20a615.5bn is proposed for the construction of a sports secretariat within the complex.<\/p>\n<p>NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, has said work on the stadium is expected to begin before the end of 2025 as part of efforts to revive Nigeria\u2019s sports infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in 2003, the Abuja stadium has struggled to meet standards for hosting major fixtures, despite a renovation between 2020 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The pitch deteriorated shortly after the upgrade, forcing the Super Eagles to move home matches to Uyo. Nigeria last played at the venue in March 2023, losing 1\u20130 to Guinea-Bissau.<\/p>\n<p>Built at a cost of about $360m, the 60,491-capacity stadium hosted the 8th African Games and remains Nigeria\u2019s flagship sports facility.<\/p>\n<p>The NSC\u2019s 2026 budget also provides \u20a64.223bn for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, \u20a65.105bn for preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games, \u20a61bn for the 2026 Winter Olympics, and \u20a614.2bn for Nigeria\u2019s participation in AFCON, WAFCON and other FIFA competitions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Immaculata The rehabilitation of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, is expected to gulp \u20a624.642bn from the \u20a6203.603bn allocated to the National Sports Commission (NSC), in the 2026 appropriation bill.
