{"id":81890,"date":"2026-01-19T12:28:50","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T12:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=81890"},"modified":"2026-01-19T12:28:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T12:28:50","slug":"lagos-residents-risk-lives-scooping-fuel-from-overturned-tanker-in-apapa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2026\/01\/19\/lagos-residents-risk-lives-scooping-fuel-from-overturned-tanker-in-apapa\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos Residents Risk Lives Scooping Fuel From Overturned Tanker in Apapa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Huldah Shado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Residents of Lagos on Monday scooped fuel from an overturned petrol tanker along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, causing traffic disruption and raising serious safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. near Coconut Bus Stop in Apapa when a fully loaded tanker conveying Premium Motor Spirit reportedly lost control and fell on its side, spilling fuel across the road.<\/p>\n<p>Eyewitnesses said scores of residents, passersby and commercial motorists rushed to the scene with jerry cans and buckets to scoop the leaking fuel, despite the obvious danger.<\/p>\n<p>The development led to heavy traffic congestion on the expressway, with commuters stranded for hours, while others sought alternative routes or trekked long distances.<\/p>\n<p>Some residents attributed the risky act to fuel scarcity and high prices. A commercial motorcyclist said many saw the spill as an opportunity to get petrol cheaply, despite the life-threatening risk.<\/p>\n<p>Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and security agencies later arrived, dispersed the crowd and cordoned off the area.
