{"id":81791,"date":"2026-01-18T05:52:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T05:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=81791"},"modified":"2026-01-18T05:52:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T05:52:22","slug":"reps-move-to-ban-public-parade-of-suspects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2026\/01\/18\/reps-move-to-ban-public-parade-of-suspects\/","title":{"rendered":"Reps Move to Ban Public Parade of Suspects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives is considering a constitutional amendment to prohibit the public parade of suspects by police and other law enforcement agencies, in a bid to strengthen the protection of human dignity.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal, adopted by the House Committee on Constitution Review chaired by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, is expected to be debated when the National Assembly resumes from the Christmas and New Year recess.<\/p>\n<p>The bill seeks to amend Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution to explicitly define the public parade of arrested persons as torture, inhuman or degrading treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed provision states that such parades would constitute a violation of the right to dignity of the human person.<\/p>\n<p>For years, law enforcement agencies have routinely displayed suspects to the media before trial, a practice widely criticised by human rights groups and the judiciary as a breach of the presumption of innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting, pro-democracy activist Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin praised the move, saying it aligns Nigeria\u2019s laws with international human rights standards, including the Convention Against Torture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Immaculata The House of Representatives is considering a constitutional amendment to prohibit the public parade of suspects by police and other law enforcement agencies, in a bid to strengthen the protection of human dignity.
