He said the international system is under severe strain from wars, deepening divisions, climate breakdown and declining respect for international law.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief recalled assuming office in 2017 during a period of optimism for multilateralism following the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n<p>Outlining his focus for 2026, Guterres identified three key priorities: upholding the UN Charter, promoting peace among nations and with nature, and fostering unity amid growing global divisions.<\/p>\n<p>He cautioned that widening geopolitical rifts and cuts to development and humanitarian funding are placing multilateral institutions under intense pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we need cooperation most, we are least inclined to invest in it,\u201d he said, adding that despite doubts about international cooperation, the UN would not abandon its mission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Omoniyi David United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres has warned that the world is \u201cbrimming with conflict, impunity, inequality and unpredictability\u201d as global cooperation weakens at a critical moment.
