This strategic move aims to address the critical reduction in the number of justices, which reached an unprecedented low of 10 due to retirements.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the inauguration of the 2023\/2024 legal year of the Court and the induction of 58 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the Supreme Court Complex, CJN Ariwoola shared insights into the efforts initiated by his predecessor and the urgency he placed on achieving the full complement upon assuming office in June 2022.<\/p>\n<p>CJN Ariwoola emphasized, &#8220;I can convincingly tell the litigant public that in a very short while, the Supreme Court of Nigeria will, for the very first time in its history, get the Constitutionally-prescribed full complement of 21 Justices.&#8221; He stressed the significance of meeting the court&#8217;s constitutional requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the state of the judiciary, CJN Ariwoola underscored the necessity for statutory protection of judicial independence, extending this protection beyond the federal level to encompass state-level judiciary. He commended the judiciary&#8217;s reliability and underscored the collective responsibility to maintain the purity of the judicial process by avoiding fear and favor.<\/p>\n<p>CJN Ariwoola urged judicial officers to uphold impartiality in their judgments, emphasizing the crucial role of integrity and self-discipline.
