{"id":81050,"date":"2026-01-01T17:23:40","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T17:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=81050"},"modified":"2026-01-01T17:23:40","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T17:23:40","slug":"tax-other-reforms-can-calls-for-wisdom-fairness-restraint-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2026\/01\/01\/tax-other-reforms-can-calls-for-wisdom-fairness-restraint-in-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax, Other Reforms: CAN Calls for Wisdom, Fairness, Restraint in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Samson Adeyanju<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has urged the Federal Government to approach ongoing tax, fiscal and other policy reforms with wisdom, fairness and restraint, warning that economic decisions must not worsen the hardship already faced by millions of Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>In a New Year statement issued on January 1, 2026, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said while the association welcomes discussions around reforms, recovery and growth, such policies must translate into real improvements in the daily lives of citizens.<\/p>\n<p>According to CAN, the past year was marked by economic hardship, rising cost of living, insecurity and uncertainty, placing enormous strain on families and communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEconomic advancement must be evident in the daily lives of citizens &#8211; when food is affordable, healthcare is accessible, education is attainable, and meaningful work is available,\u201d the statement said, stressing that development which does not touch ordinary Nigerians remains incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>The Christian body cautioned that tax and fiscal reforms should be implemented with deliberate protection for small businesses, low-income earners and rural communities, noting that recovery can only be meaningful if it is inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>CAN also expressed concern over the persistent insecurity in many parts of the country, calling on government to take decisive and sustained action against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and violent crime.<\/p>\n<p>It further demanded a clear and time-bound plan for the resettlement of communities displaced by prolonged violence, insisting that beyond temporary relief, the nation must pursue full restoration.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond economic and security issues, CAN said Nigeria\u2019s challenges are also moral, citing corruption, injustice and division as factors eroding national trust.<\/p>\n<p>It called on leaders at all levels to demonstrate integrity, accountability and a genuine commitment to service.<\/p>\n<p>Reaffirming the Church\u2019s resolve to stand with the people, CAN expressed cautious hope that Nigeria can experience renewal and stability in 2026 through responsible leadership, justice and unity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samson Adeyanju The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has urged the Federal Government to approach ongoing tax, fiscal and other policy reforms with wisdom, fairness and restraint, warning that economic decisions must not worsen the hardship already faced by millions of Nigerians.
