Fr. Michael Banjo, has called on Nigerians to allow their faith shape personal conduct, family life and national responsibility, describing authentic Christian living as vital to the country’s renewal.

In his New Year message titled “Faith at the Service of the Nation,” issued on January 1, 2026, Fr. Banjo said time, from a Christian perspective, is a sacred space in which God acts for humanity’s salvation, urging citizens to live each moment with God at the centre.

He explained that Christmas marked a transformation of human identity through Christ, moving believers “from slavery to sonship,” and said this identity as children of God must be reflected in daily life through integrity, courage and love for others.

“To live as sons and daughters of God means recognising one another as brothers and sisters, rejecting divisions based on tribe, religion or social status, and treating every person with dignity,” he said.

Fr. Banjo stressed that faith also carries moral demands for public life, insisting that Nigeria’s renewal begins with renewed consciences rather than rhetoric alone.

He urged Nigerians to show honesty, fairness and respect in their dealings, while calling for responsible use and protection of public property.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, he appealed to citizens to make choices guided by conscience, truth and the common good, rather than ethnic sentiments, religious bias or material inducements.

He also admonished public servants, professionals and business owners to reject corruption and abuse of office.

Highlighting the family as the foundation of society, the CSN Secretary General said strong nations are built on well-formed consciences nurtured in homes and schools.

He urged parents and teachers to instil values of faith, discipline, honesty and hard work in children.

He also addressed Nigerian youths, warning against drugs, crime and reckless living, and encouraged them to embrace discipline, skill acquisition and character formation as pathways to a meaningful future.

While acknowledging the economic hardship, insecurity and social tensions faced by the country, Fr. Banjo said the New Year remains a sign of hope, noting that genuine national transformation would come when faith is lived out in everyday decisions.

He concluded with prayers for God’s guidance, renewal and peace for Nigeria in the New Year.

By Samson Adeyanju The Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Rev.
