Naval personnel arrived to find thick smoke billowing from the vessel and immediately launched rescue and firefighting operations.<\/p>\n<p>Crew members were rescued using lifebuoys and emergency equipment, and first aid was administered.<\/p>\n<p>The vessel had 21 crew members, 14 Nigerians and seven Cameroonians. The Chief Engineer, who reportedly jumped into the water fearing an explosion, remains missing as search and rescue efforts continue.<\/p>\n<p>Support for the operation came from the Forward Operating Base Ibaka, Naval Security Station 030 Houseboat, and local fishermen.<\/p>\n<p>Portable pumps were used to contain the fire, which affected the midship and aft sections of the vessel.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to protecting seafarers and maritime assets within Nigeria\u2019s territorial waters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Omoniyi David The Nigerian Navy has rescued 20 crew members from MV Chimba Express after it caught fire along the Oron\u2013Calabar waterways in Cross River State on December 22, 2025.
