{"id":80602,"date":"2025-12-20T05:02:26","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T05:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=80602"},"modified":"2025-12-20T05:02:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T05:02:26","slug":"lg-autonomy-tinubu-warns-governors-of-direct-faac-deductions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/12\/20\/lg-autonomy-tinubu-warns-governors-of-direct-faac-deductions\/","title":{"rendered":"LG Autonomy: Tinubu Warns Governors of Direct FAAC Deductions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu has warned state governors that he may issue an executive order to enforce direct funding of local governments if they continue to disregard a Supreme Court judgment granting councils financial autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>Tinubu gave the warning on Friday while addressing the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC), meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He cautioned that persistent withholding of local government allocations by state governments could force the Federal Government to channel council funds directly from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).<\/p>\n<p>The president stressed that the Supreme Court had clearly directed that local councils receive their allocations without state interference, warning that continued non-compliance could leave him with no option but to act.<\/p>\n<p>The warning follows the Supreme Court\u2019s July 11, 2024 judgment, which declared it unconstitutional for state governments to retain or manage funds meant for local governments and ordered that allocations from the federation account be paid directly to them.<\/p>\n<p>The apex court based its decision on Section 162(5-8) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides for direct funding of local councils.<\/p>\n<p>Tinubu said respect for the court\u2019s ruling was non-negotiable, adding that federal intervention would be inevitable if states failed to comply.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Immaculata President Bola Tinubu has warned state governors that he may issue an executive order to enforce direct funding of local governments if they continue to disregard a Supreme Court judgment granting councils financial autonomy.
