{"id":80353,"date":"2025-12-16T12:27:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T12:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=80353"},"modified":"2025-12-16T12:27:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T12:27:09","slug":"nba-threatens-contempt-action-against-igp-over-tinted-glass-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/12\/16\/nba-threatens-contempt-action-against-igp-over-tinted-glass-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"NBA Threatens Contempt Action Against IGP Over Tinted Glass Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has threatened to institute contempt proceedings against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, over the planned resumption of the suspended motor vehicle tinted glass permit policy.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued on Tuesday, NBA President, Afam Osigwe, described the move as a \u201cgrave affront to the majesty of the court\u201d and a violation of the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that the association would commence committal proceedings if the police authorities failed to halt enforcement of the policy.<\/p>\n<p>The warning followed a December 15, 2025, press release by CSP Hundeyin announcing that enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy would resume on January 2, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The policy, introduced in April 2025, requires motorists to obtain annual tinted glass permits online.<\/p>\n<p>Its enforcement was earlier scheduled for June 1, 2025, but was postponed to October 2, 2025, and later suspended.<\/p>\n<p>The NBA said the policy had resulted in widespread complaints of harassment, extortion and human rights abuses, particularly against young Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2025, the association, through its Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), challenged the policy at the Federal High Court, Abuja, arguing that the Motor Tinted Glass (Prohibition), Act of 1991 is outdated, unconstitutional and prone to abuse.<\/p>\n<p>It also cited a Federal High Court order in Warri directing parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of a motion for interlocutory injunction.<\/p>\n<p>Osigwe recalled that the IGP had earlier suspended enforcement after consultations with the NBA and an undertaking to respect court processes.<\/p>\n<p>He described the renewed enforcement announcement as a \u201creckless overreach\u201d and a \u201ccontemptuous disregard\u201d for judicial authority.<\/p>\n<p>The NBA urged the police to withdraw the directive and suspend enforcement pending the final determination of all related court cases.<\/p>\n<p>It also directed its branches and Human Rights Committees to provide legal support to any citizen harassed or penalised under the policy, while calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigeria Police Force, however, defended the decision, citing rising security threats linked to unauthorised tinted vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>CSP Hundeyin said the earlier suspension was voluntary and not ordered by the court, adding that the policy is aimed at safeguarding lives and property.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has threatened to institute contempt proceedings against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, over the planned resumption of the suspended motor vehicle tinted glass permit policy.
