{"id":80325,"date":"2025-12-16T06:51:23","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T06:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=80325"},"modified":"2025-12-16T06:51:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T06:51:23","slug":"nis-warns-of-rising-migrant-smuggling-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/12\/16\/nis-warns-of-rising-migrant-smuggling-threats\/","title":{"rendered":"NIS Warns of Rising Migrant Smuggling Threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Huldah Shado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has warned that organised migrant smuggling networks are expanding through cyberspace and increasingly dangerous routes, exposing migrants to trafficking, extortion, sexual exploitation, violence and death.<\/p>\n<p>The warning was issued on Monday as the NIS flagged off the 2025 Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Week at its headquarters in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking through the Deputy Comptroller-General (Works and Logistics), Ada Umanah, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, said the campaign was aimed at raising awareness, building solidarity and strengthening commitment to combating migrant smuggling.<\/p>\n<p>She said the 2025 theme, \u201cSmuggling of migrants: Emerging trends, realities and national response,\u201d reflects Nigeria\u2019s security concerns and global migration realities, noting that criminal networks are exploiting vulnerable persons \u201cin search of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nandap warned that the growing use of online platforms and risky transit routes, especially desert crossings, has created new layers of danger for migrants, including human trafficking and death.<\/p>\n<p>She clarified that the NIS was not discouraging migration but advocating safe, regular and orderly migration.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the service has adopted a multi-pronged approach focusing on prevention, enforcement and international cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>On prevention, Nandap said the NIS had intensified public education on the dangers of irregular migration and the deceptive tactics of smugglers, while expanding collaboration with government agencies, civil society, faith-based groups, unions and schools.<\/p>\n<p>She added that special outreach programmes were being carried out at NYSC orientation camps nationwide to sensitise young Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>Nandap stressed that combating migrant smuggling requires collective effort, urging families and communities to help protect young people from criminal networks, while reaffirming the NIS\u2019 commitment to partnerships that promote safe and regular migration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Huldah Shado The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has warned that organised migrant smuggling networks are expanding through cyberspace and increasingly dangerous routes, exposing migrants to trafficking, extortion, sexual exploitation, violence and death.
