{"id":79823,"date":"2025-12-08T21:44:26","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T21:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=79823"},"modified":"2025-12-08T21:44:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T21:44:26","slug":"court-rejects-kanus-request-to-leave-sokoto-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/12\/08\/court-rejects-kanus-request-to-leave-sokoto-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Rejects Kanu\u2019s Request to Leave Sokoto Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday declined an ex parte application by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, seeking transfer from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a facility closer to the Federal Capital Territory.<\/p>\n<p>Justice James Omotosho held that the request could not be considered without hearing from the Federal Government and the Nigerian Correctional Service.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered that both parties be served and ruled that such an application must come by motion on notice, not ex parte.<\/p>\n<p>Kanu\u2019s counsel from the Legal Aid Council, Demdoo Asan, had sought to compel authorities to relocate Kanu to a custodial centre within the court\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>The judge struck out the prayer after Asan conceded it was inappropriate for an ex parte proceeding.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Omotosho also noted that a notice of appeal filed on Kanu\u2019s behalf was dated November 10, ten days before judgment was delivered on November 20 rendering it invalid.
