{"id":79768,"date":"2025-12-08T00:12:30","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T00:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=79768"},"modified":"2025-12-08T00:12:30","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T00:12:30","slug":"unesco-urges-journalists-csos-to-combat-climate-change-misinformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/12\/08\/unesco-urges-journalists-csos-to-combat-climate-change-misinformation\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO Urges Journalists, CSOs to Combat Climate Change Misinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Omoniyi David<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), has urged journalists, civil society groups and community leaders to intensify efforts against climate change misinformation, warning that misleading narratives are undermining public understanding and slowing climate action.<\/p>\n<p>The call followed the launch of the Declaration on Information Integrity on Climate Change at COP30 in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Lagos at a two-day workshop themed \u201cDigital Transformation of the Climate Change Information Ecosystem for a Knowledge-Driven Society,\u201d UNESCO Abuja Head of Office, Jean-Paul Abiaga, represented by Yachat Nuhu said combating misinformation requires collective responsibility across media and community structures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMisinformation spreads faster than corrective facts, weakening trust in scientific evidence and deepening community vulnerabilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop, organised by UNESCO Abuja in partnership with the Media Awareness and Information For All Network (MAIN), brought together journalists, fact-checkers, youth groups, academics and civil society actors.<\/p>\n<p>In a presentation, National Information Officer of the UN Information Centre, Oluseyi Soremekun, warned that climate myths, often fuelled by distorted data and unverified digital content, create confusion among policymakers and discourage support for climate-friendly initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding these myths is crucial because they influence attitudes, behaviours and policy decisions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Director of SBZ Development Ltd (USA), Samuel Babatunde, highlighted education as a key driver of climate resilience, noting that climate literacy strengthens food systems, reduces emissions and supports green economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>MAIN Chairman, Prof. Jide Jimoh, said traditional beliefs still shape climate interpretations in many communities, contributing to scepticism about environmental changes.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop, he noted, seeks to bridge scientific knowledge with cultural realities to promote climate-responsive behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change had earlier unveiled the COP30 Declaration, endorsed by several countries, outlining international commitments to counter climate disinformation and protect environmental journalists and researchers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Omoniyi David The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), has urged journalists, civil society groups and community leaders to intensify efforts against climate change misinformation, warning that misleading narratives are undermining public understanding and slowing climate action.
