{"id":79399,"date":"2025-11-27T16:15:55","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T16:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=79399"},"modified":"2025-11-27T16:15:55","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T16:15:55","slug":"catholic-secretariat-urges-ethical-governance-social-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/11\/27\/catholic-secretariat-urges-ethical-governance-social-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholic Secretariat Urges Ethical Governance, Social Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Samson Adeyanju<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), has urged Church leaders and institutions to champion ethical governance, accountable leadership, and proactive social action as Nigeria pursues sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>The call was made at the 2025 Annual General Meeting of the Church and Society Department held Wednesday at the CSN Resource Centre, Durumi, Abuja, with the theme: \u201cHarbingers of Hope: Mainstreaming Catholic Social Teaching for Development in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The meeting brought together diocesan directors, unit secretaries and partners to review the Church\u2019s social mandate and strengthen nationwide Catholic social action.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins of Lagos, Chairman of the department, commended participants as \u201cefficient field workers bringing the face of the Church to society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized the department\u2019s role as the Church\u2019s immediate interface with the public and urged strategic collaboration across dioceses.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering the keynote on behalf of Most Rev. (Prof.) Christopher Naseri of Calabar, Rev. Fr. Evaristus Bassey said Catholic Social Teaching provides a strong ethical framework for national development.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that corruption, weak institutions and inequality continue to impede progress, and urged Church institutions to prioritize human rights, environmental responsibility, accountable governance, civic education and electoral transparency.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Sylvester Gopep, Chairman of the Family and Human Life Committee, encouraged participants to work with passion, vision and planning, stressing that inter-unit cooperation is vital for meaningful impact.<\/p>\n<p>Director of the department, Rev. Fr.
