{"id":79358,"date":"2025-11-26T04:38:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T04:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=79358"},"modified":"2025-11-26T04:38:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T04:38:09","slug":"northern-leaders-exploiting-security-challenges-for-political-gain-senator-shehu-sani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/11\/26\/northern-leaders-exploiting-security-challenges-for-political-gain-senator-shehu-sani\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern leaders exploiting security challenges for political gain -Senator Shehu Sani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has accused northern political elites of turning the region\u2019s worsening insecurity into a tool for political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Kaduna during a courtesy visit by the Open Heart Foundation and the Women Empowerment Centre, Sani said northern leaders must confront the root causes of insecurity instead of manipulating the crisis for electoral leverage.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that the persistent violence across the North had become a fertile ground for political opportunism.<\/p>\n<p>Sani listed almajiri, mass illiteracy, poverty and chronic underdevelopment as key triggers of the insecurity ravaging the region for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p>He said the terrorists in the North-East and the bandits in the North-West were products of the region\u2019s unresolved internal decay, insisting that only northern leaders could address the crisis at its roots.<\/p>\n<p>He criticised what he described as political hypocrisy, noting that some leaders now raising their voices over insecurity were silent when mass kidnappings and attacks were rampant under previous administrations.<\/p>\n<p>He alleged that some political actors were celebrating violent incidents because they see bloodshed as a way to weaken the current government before the 2027 polls.<\/p>\n<p>Sani also accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of contributing to the crisis, recalling that El-Rufai once admitted to appeasing bandits and withdrew his own son from school because of insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>He said the irony of El-Rufai\u2019s recent comments on security could not be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>While acknowledging that Kaduna is not yet safe, Sani credited Governor Uba Sani\u2019s administration with reducing religious tensions and improving security in volatile areas such as Birnin Gwari.<\/p>\n<p>He added that President Bola Tinubu\u2019s government had also made progress, though much remained to be done.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that insurgent networks now operated across West Africa with growing boldness, and cautioned that attacks on schools, churches and mosques could rise as elections approach.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders of the visiting NGOs, Hassan Abdullai Zubairu and Rabiatu Nasiru, expressed grief over the recurring abductions of students and appealed for urgent government action to rescue victims still in captivity.<\/p>\n<p>They urged Sani to amplify their concerns and push for decisive measures to end the insecurity plaguing the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0 Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has accused northern political elites of turning the region\u2019s worsening insecurity into a tool for political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
