In a statement released today, the PEPC clarified that the news circulating about Justice Ugo’s resignation is false and should be disregarded. The court further refuted the allegation of Bola Tinubu’s meddling in the judiciary.

The controversial news of Justice Ugo’s alleged resignation surfaced on the internet last Thursday, citing claims of attempts by the President to undermine democracy. The report insinuated that Ugo stepped down due to perceived pressures from the executive branch that he feared would harm Nigeria’s democratic integrity.

According to the online platform, Justice Ugo was said to have issued a statement expressing concerns about taking sides with Aso Rock on petitions challenging Tinubu’s election, warning that such a stance would be detrimental to Nigeria’s democracy. The statement claimed that he could not, in good conscience, remain silent on this matter.

The report further alleged that Justice Ugo disclosed being asked to compromise the independence of the judiciary by favoring a particular political candidate, widely believed to be Tinubu. He was purportedly instructed to suppress evidence and dismiss cases that could potentially impact the election.

However, Appeal Court Chief Registrar Umar Mohammed Bangari categorically stated that the report is unfounded, asserting that no Justice has resigned from the Court of Appeal. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Bangari urged the public to ignore the misinformation.

Deputy Registrar Kabir Akanbi also echoed the sentiment, confirming that Justice Ugo has not resigned from the Presidential Election Petition Court. He clarified that Justice Ugo is actively involved in handling petitions filed by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

These petitions seek the nullification of Tinubu’s election on various legal grounds, including alleged identity theft, certificate forgery, and perjury.

In the midst of this controversy, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) accused Bola Tinubu of attempting to intimidate the PEPC with claims of ‘anarchy.’ Meanwhile, Afe Babalola advocated for only retired Judges and Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to preside over election tribunals. Justice Ariwoola also called upon Judges to deliver justice and restore confidence in the judiciary amid the election petitions.

The PEPC remains resolute in upholding the rule of law and ensuring a fair and just resolution to all election-related disputes.

The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) has vehemently denied the media report claiming the resignation of Justice Boloukuoromo Ugo.
