{"id":77439,"date":"2025-10-25T10:00:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T10:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=77439"},"modified":"2025-10-25T10:00:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T10:00:06","slug":"nigeria-exits-global-money-laundering-watchlist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/10\/25\/nigeria-exits-global-money-laundering-watchlist\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Exits Global Money-Laundering Watchlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Merciful Omoba<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu has hailed Nigeria\u2019s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) \u201cgrey list\u201d as a major boost to the nation\u2019s economy and financial credibility.<\/p>\n<p>The FATF, the global watchdog on money laundering and terrorist financing, announced Nigeria\u2019s delisting at its October 2025 plenary in Paris following the country\u2019s full implementation of a 19-point action plan to strengthen its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing systems.<\/p>\n<p>Tinubu, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the move as \u201ca strategic victory for our economy and renewed confidence in Nigeria\u2019s financial governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria was placed on the grey list in February 2023 over weak enforcement and poor inter-agency coordination.<\/p>\n<p>The President commended the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), and its Director\/CEO, Hafsat Bakari, for leading reforms that met FATF standards.<\/p>\n<p>Bakari confirmed the delisting, noting that it reflected Nigeria\u2019s commitment to global financial integrity through stronger laws, enforcement, and cross-border intelligence sharing.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say the exit will ease cross-border transactions, attract foreign investment, and boost confidence in Nigeria\u2019s financial system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Merciful Omoba &nbsp; President Bola Tinubu has hailed Nigeria\u2019s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) \u201cgrey list\u201d as a major boost to the nation\u2019s economy and financial credibility.
