{"id":77005,"date":"2025-10-21T14:38:04","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T14:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=77005"},"modified":"2025-10-21T14:38:04","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T14:38:04","slug":"biochemists-push-for-herbal-medicine-integration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/10\/21\/biochemists-push-for-herbal-medicine-integration\/","title":{"rendered":"Biochemists Push for Herbal Medicine Integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Huldah Shado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Plant Treatment Oasis Association of Nigeria, a body of professional biochemists, has urged the Federal Government to integrate herbal and alternative medicine into the national healthcare system to enhance citizens\u2019 well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking shortly after the association\u2019s 2025 conference in Abuja, its President, Olayemi Ikotun, said Nigeria stands to benefit immensely from the medicinal potential of plant-based supplements, which have proven effective in treating various ailments without adverse side effects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur members have been producing natural medicinal supplements derived from raw plant materials. These remedies are potent, safe, and effective, unlike many synthetic drugs,\u201d Ikotun said.<\/p>\n<p>He lamented that despite its deep cultural roots, traditional and herbal medicine continues to be sidelined in favour of orthodox medical practices.<\/p>\n<p>He called for government recognition and support to harness herbal treatments as complementary healthcare options.<\/p>\n<p>Ikotun noted that older generations in Nigeria enjoyed longer, healthier lives through natural remedies, a practice that can now be enhanced through biochemistry and modern research.<\/p>\n<p>He also disclosed that the association has participated in several national research summits advocating policy support for herbal medicine development and regulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government should create an enabling environment for the regulation, research, and integration of alternative medicine into our health framework,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The conference, themed \u201cAdvancement of Natural Plant Supplement in Nigeria,\u201d brought together researchers, practitioners, and new inductees who reaffirmed their commitment to promoting safe, science-based, and culturally relevant healthcare solutions through Nigeria\u2019s rich medicinal plant resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Huldah Shado The Plant Treatment Oasis Association of Nigeria, a body of professional biochemists, has urged the Federal Government to integrate herbal and alternative medicine into the national healthcare system to enhance citizens\u2019 well-being.
