{"id":76049,"date":"2025-10-03T12:43:29","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T12:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=76049"},"modified":"2025-10-03T12:43:29","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T12:43:29","slug":"glovo-strengthens-sme-growth-with-academy-in-abuja","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/10\/03\/glovo-strengthens-sme-growth-with-academy-in-abuja\/","title":{"rendered":"Glovo Strengthens SME Growth with Academy in Abuja"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Omoniyi David<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Global delivery platform, Glovo, has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in Nigeria through its Glovo Academy initiative, held in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy is an in-person learning and development programme designed to equip local businesses with digital tools, training, and advisory support to optimise operations, boost visibility, and increase online sales on the Glovo platform.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the event, Head of Growth, Glovo Nigeria, Reni Onafeko, said the company is focused on enabling SMEs to access opportunities in financing, digital literacy, and business advisory services.<\/p>\n<p>She revealed that since Glovo launched in Abuja in 2022, it has facilitated over N11 billion in value for partners, with millions of orders delivered.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, orders in the FCT have grown by 30% year-on-year, with the platform now working with more than 1,000 local restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Onafeko stressed that digital literacy is critical for SMEs to expand, formalise, and scale sustainably.<\/p>\n<p>During a panel session, Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Industry, Ifeoma Williams, described MSMEs as the backbone of Nigeria\u2019s economy, contributing about 40% of the GDP, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>She lamented the poor access of SMEs to government loans, attributing the challenge to weak business structures and poor planning, but assured that policies are being developed to foster a more supportive environment.<\/p>\n<p>Founder of Ahmad\u2019s Shawarma, Tijani Mustapha, identified human resource management and quality control as key challenges for small businesses, urging entrepreneurs to build resilience and adopt technology-driven solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Head of ICT at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Kayode Meyanbe, announced that SMEDAN, in partnership with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), is offering free registration for 250,000 businesses.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the agency, working with banks, is providing loans at interest rates below 10 percent, alongside capacity-building programmes delivered in collaboration with Kaduna and Lagos Business Schools.<\/p>\n<p>Head of Commercial, Glovo Nigeria, Kolawole Adeniyi, disclosed that since commencing operations in Africa in 2021, the company has invested \u20ac206 million on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that 90% of Glovo\u2019s business partners are SMEs, with the platform generating about N55 billion in direct economic value for them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Omoniyi David &nbsp; Global delivery platform, Glovo, has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in Nigeria through its Glovo Academy initiative, held in Abuja.
