{"id":75902,"date":"2025-10-01T06:59:27","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T06:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=75902"},"modified":"2025-10-01T06:59:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T06:59:27","slug":"sex-workers-to-pay-tax-under-new-fiscal-reforms-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/10\/01\/sex-workers-to-pay-tax-under-new-fiscal-reforms-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex Workers to Pay Tax Under New Fiscal Reforms \u2013FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Adenike Lawal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Government has announced that commercial sex workers will now be required to pay taxes under Nigeria\u2019s reformed fiscal framework.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this during an interactive session at the Redeemed Christian Church of God\u2019s City of David parish in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the new tax regime is not concerned with the legality or morality of income sources but strictly with whether individuals earn money from providing services or selling goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether someone is involved in sex work or any other informal service provision, it is still considered an economic activity,\u201d Oyedele said. \u201cIf you provide a service, even one regarded as morally questionable, you are expected to pay tax on the income earned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that the law\u2019s scope is defined by income generation. \u201cThe law simply asks: \u2018Did you earn income?\u2019 If yes, and it came from rendering a service or selling a product, then it is taxable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Oyedele, however, clarified that gifts and non-exchange transfers, such as money sent to relatives, friends, or strangers without expectation of service or goods in return, are not taxable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese reforms are part of broader initiatives to modernize and expand Nigeria\u2019s tax base,\u201d he said, citing newly enacted legislations including the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adenike Lawal The Federal Government has announced that commercial sex workers will now be required to pay taxes under Nigeria\u2019s reformed fiscal framework.
