{"id":75799,"date":"2025-09-28T15:51:40","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T15:51:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=75799"},"modified":"2025-09-28T15:51:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T15:51:40","slug":"inec-launches-grassroots-campaign-in-abuja-for-voter-registration-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/09\/28\/inec-launches-grassroots-campaign-in-abuja-for-voter-registration-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"INEC Launches Grassroots Campaign in Abuja for Voter Registration Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Huldah Shado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday launched a grassroots sensitisation campaign in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ahead of its decentralised voter registration exercise, which begins Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise, scheduled for September 29 to October 8, will cover 62 electoral wards across the six area councils of the FCT.<\/p>\n<p>Registration centres will operate daily, including weekends, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the rollout, INEC officials and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), visited major markets across the FCT, distributing flyers, answering residents\u2019 questions, and offering guidance on transfers, replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and new registrations. Stakeholder consultations were also held at council level to secure community support.<\/p>\n<p>The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), scheme allows Nigerians aged 18 and above to enrol as new voters, update details, or replace PVCs.<\/p>\n<p>Despite an estimated population of over three million, the FCT has struggled with low registration and unequal access between rural and urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>To improve participation, INEC devolved registration to the ward level and discontinued its online pre-registration platform on September 15, shifting emphasis to in-person processes at 69 fixed centres, including local government offices.<\/p>\n<p>The move followed staff training, security meetings with the police, and a mobilisation roadshow on September 17.<\/p>\n<p>FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Malam Aminu Kasimu Idris, said disability groups had been consulted to ensure inclusivity, with ramps and sign language interpreters provided at registration points.<\/p>\n<p>INEC urged all eligible citizens in the FCT to take advantage of the exercise while warning against multiple registrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Huldah Shado &nbsp; The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday launched a grassroots sensitisation campaign in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ahead of its decentralised voter registration exercise, which begins Monday.
