The train had 618 people onboard, including NRC staff, security personnel, and crew members.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one passengers sustained injuries, but no fatalities were recorded.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau noted that the derailment was the second at Asham Station in 13 months.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators found that damaged sleepers from the previous incident were only patched, while the automatic crossing point switch remained unserviceable and was being operated manually with a broken point clip.<\/p>\n<p>The report also highlighted systemic lapses in the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), including the lack of refresher training for staff, unavailability of critical maintenance equipment and spare parts, and defective CCTV cameras, communication tools, and station clocks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe forward locomotive and seven adjoining coaches derailed shortly after passing the track switch point at Asham Station,\u201d the NSIB stated.<\/p>\n<p>It recommended full replacement of damaged sleepers, use of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), parts for point switches, refresher training for NRC staff, and urgent restoration of defective infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau stressed that the findings are preliminary, adding that further investigations will review track alignment, locomotive components, crew statements, and eyewitness accounts before the release of a final report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Adeola &nbsp; The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has released its preliminary findings on the Abuja-Kaduna train derailment of August 26, 2025.
