{"id":75402,"date":"2025-09-12T07:36:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T07:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=75402"},"modified":"2025-09-12T07:36:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T07:36:15","slug":"ansaru-commander-jailed-15-years-faces-additional-terrorism-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/09\/12\/ansaru-commander-jailed-15-years-faces-additional-terrorism-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Ansaru Commander Jailed 15 Years, Faces Additional Terrorism Charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Anifowoshe Oladipupo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a senior commander of the proscribed Ansaru sect, Mahmud Usman, to 15 years\u2019 imprisonment for his role in funding terrorism through illegal mining.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the judgment on Thursday, September 11, 2025, after Usman also known as Abu Bara\u2019a, Abbas, or Mukhtar pleaded guilty to the charges.<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, Usman, who identified himself as the Emir of Ansaru, diverted proceeds from illegal mining into the purchase of arms used for terrorism and kidnapping operations. He was arraigned alongside his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the sentence, the court ordered that Usman remain in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), to face 31 additional terrorism-related charges.<\/p>\n<p>Ansaru, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, has been linked to several violent attacks, including the July 2022 Kuje prison break in Abuja, during which more than 600 inmates escaped.<\/p>\n<p>The group remains notorious for its coordinated operations and role in financing terrorism across Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Anifowoshe Oladipupo The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a senior commander of the proscribed Ansaru sect, Mahmud Usman, to 15 years\u2019 imprisonment for his role in funding terrorism through illegal mining.
