The Trade Union Congress (TUC), has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to withdraw the newly introduced 5% tax on petroleum products.<\/p>\n
The levy, contained in the Nigeria Tax Administration Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, has been denounced by the union as an \u201canti-people policy\u201d that will deepen hardship for millions of Nigerians.<\/p>\n
In a statement jointly signed by TUC President, Festus Osifo, and General Secretary, Nuhu Toro, the union said the measure would \u201ccompound suffering, cripple businesses, and push citizens further into poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n
The labour leaders reminded government that Nigerians are still grappling with the effects of fuel subsidy removal, rising inflation, and the weakening naira.<\/p>\n
They warned that unless the policy is reversed immediately, the TUC would mobilize its affiliates and the general public for mass resistance, including the possibility of a nationwide strike.<\/p>\n
