{"id":75161,"date":"2025-09-08T13:57:54","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T13:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=75161"},"modified":"2025-09-08T13:57:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T13:57:54","slug":"similar-lassa-virus-strains-raise-hope-for-single-west-africa-vaccine-abimiku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/09\/08\/similar-lassa-virus-strains-raise-hope-for-single-west-africa-vaccine-abimiku\/","title":{"rendered":"Similar Lassa Virus Strains Raise Hope for Single West Africa Vaccine -Abimiku"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Sarah Sam Adda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Executive Director of the International Research Centre of Excellence (IRCE), Prof. Alash\u2019le Abimiku, says similarities among Lassa virus strains across Nigeria and West Africa offer strong prospects for developing a single vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Abuja ahead of the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria\u2019s (IHVN), 3rd Annual Scientific Symposium, Abimiku said studies revealed minimal variation in strains and their rodent hosts across states like Bauchi and Edo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is good for vaccine development because if you make one vaccine, it can cut across,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed that Lassa fever remains a major health concern in Nigeria and West Africa, with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), reporting 857 cases and 160 deaths so far in 2025.
