{"id":75033,"date":"2025-09-06T13:03:05","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T13:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=75033"},"modified":"2025-09-06T13:03:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T13:03:05","slug":"falana-slams-three-year-jail-term-for-mechanic-convicted-of-stealing-yam-in-osun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/09\/06\/falana-slams-three-year-jail-term-for-mechanic-convicted-of-stealing-yam-in-osun\/","title":{"rendered":"Falana Slams Three-Year Jail Term for Mechanic Convicted of Stealing Yam in Osun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onilede Titi Faith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has condemned the three-year prison sentence handed to a 28-year-old auto mechanic, Akeem Jimoh, for stealing yam worth \u20a635,000 in Osun State.<\/p>\n<p>Jimoh was convicted on Wednesday by an Osogbo Chief Magistrate Court after pleading guilty to stealing 17 tubers of yam.<\/p>\n<p>He told the court he acted out of hunger and pleaded for mercy, but Magistrate Muibah Olatunji sentenced him to three years in prison with hard labour, without an option of fine.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting, Falana described the ruling as \u201cinhumane\u201d and called for an urgent review of Nigeria\u2019s sentencing policy.<\/p>\n<p>He questioned the rationale behind spending scarce public funds on feeding, housing, and providing medical care for convicts jailed over petty offences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is high time the sentencing policy of the country was made humane,\u201d Falana said. \u201cWhy should the government waste scarce resources on imprisoning someone for stealing tubers of yam worth \u20a635,000?
