{"id":74978,"date":"2025-09-05T06:33:26","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T06:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=74978"},"modified":"2025-09-05T06:33:26","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T06:33:26","slug":"watra-hails-nigeria-as-broadband-mapping-model-for-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/09\/05\/watra-hails-nigeria-as-broadband-mapping-model-for-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"WATRA Hails Nigeria as Broadband Mapping Model for Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Association (WATRA), has commended Nigeria for its leadership in broadband infrastructure mapping, describing it as a model for the continent.<\/p>\n<p>The recognition followed the successful hosting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Africa Broadband Mapping (BBMaps), national event in Abuja, a milestone in the pilot phase of the Africa-BB-Maps initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The four-year programme (2025\u20132028), funded by the European Union, seeks to support 11 Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria, in developing harmonized broadband mapping systems to drive digital growth and investment.<\/p>\n<p>WATRA\u2019s Executive Secretary, Aliyu Yusuf Aboki, praised Nigeria\u2019s transparent framework, noting that data-driven policymaking can bridge connectivity gaps and foster inclusive digital economies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initiative is more than mapping, it\u2019s about enabling investment, expanding opportunity, and achieving our collective digital aspirations,\u201d Aboki said.<\/p>\n<p>Participants highlighted the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)\u2019s broadband mapping system as a continental benchmark, with calls for a National Broadband Mapping Task Force to be chaired by the NCC.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative aligns with the Africa-Europe Digital Regulators Partnership and the EU Global Gateway Strategy, both promoting sustainable digital infrastructure and regional integration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0 The West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Association (WATRA), has commended Nigeria for its leadership in broadband infrastructure mapping, describing it as a model for the continent.
