The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has taken a major step toward strengthening the region\u2019s digital resilience with a high-level briefing on cyber diplomacy held in Abuja, Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The forum brought together ambassadors, senior diplomats, and technical experts to address the rising threat of cyberattacks and map out strategies for West Africa\u2019s digital future.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, ECOWAS Commissioner S\u00e9diko Douka stressed the importance of cyber diplomacy in defending digital sovereignty and shaping international norms.<\/p>\n

He noted that the region\u2019s rapid digital transformation, while opening new opportunities, has also created vulnerabilities, including cybercrime, state-sponsored hacking, and disinformation campaigns.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur collective voice in global forums where cyber norms are established will determine whether we remain passive actors or active shapers of the digital order,\u201d Douka said.<\/p>\n

The event highlighted growing international partnerships to bolster ECOWAS\u2019s cyber efforts.<\/p>\n

The European Union and Germany are supporting the initiative, recognizing the need for democratic resilience across the region.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Annett G\u00fcnther, underscored the broader stakes, stating: \u201cThe future of diplomacy is already digital.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legal scholar and governance expert Ifeanyi-Ajufo also called for Nigeria and other ECOWAS states to embrace new approaches to diplomacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must practice anticipatory diplomacy that prepares for digital disruptions, cyber diplomacy that shapes international norms, and digital diplomacy that leverages online platforms for public engagement,\u201d she argued.<\/p>\n

The briefing identified key challenges, including technical capacity gaps, weak institutional frameworks, and the need for stronger coordination among member states.<\/p>\n

Yet, it also presented opportunities for ECOWAS to play a leading role in global digital governance, particularly through active participation in the UN\u2019s open-ended working group on cybersecurity and negotiations on the global digital compact.<\/p>\n

By prioritizing cyber diplomacy, ECOWAS signaled its determination to become a rule-maker rather than a rule-taker in the evolving digital landscape.<\/p>\n

Analysts note that success will depend on sustained political will, adequate resources, and unified action by member states to build trust and enhance technical expertise.<\/p>\n

The Abuja meeting marked a decisive shift in West Africa\u2019s approach to digital governance, setting the stage for a more coordinated strategy to protect the region\u2019s cyber infrastructure and influence global norms.<\/p>\n
