{"id":74907,"date":"2025-09-04T15:54:32","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T15:54:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=74907"},"modified":"2025-09-04T15:55:29","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T15:55:29","slug":"nigeria-risks-sliding-into-another-crisis-after-banditry-episodes-amb-keshi-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/09\/04\/nigeria-risks-sliding-into-another-crisis-after-banditry-episodes-amb-keshi-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria risks sliding into another crisis after banditry episodes, Amb Keshi warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ade Iyamoye<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Veteran diplomat and National President of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN), Ambassador Joe Keshi, has warned that Nigeria risks sliding into another major crisis after banditry if urgent action is not taken to address the plight of uneducated and unemployed youths.<\/p>\n<p>Keshi sounded the warning while delivering his keynote address at the 2025 SIGNIS Nigeria National Congress and Elections, held at the Daughters of Divine Love Retreat Centre, Lugbe, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The congress, themed \u201cCommunicating Hope and Change: Catholic Media Role in Shaping Nigeria\u2019s Future,\u201d ran from September 3-5.<\/p>\n<p>The retired envoy, who commended Catholic media for sustaining spiritual life during the COVID-19 lockdowns, said the Church\u2019s media platforms must go beyond information dissemination and act as instruments of evangelization, truth, justice, and social change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the bandits\u2019 episode, Nigeria may face another nightmare from largely uneducated, uncultured, and untrained youths.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If not engaged productively, they will constitute a new wave of crisis,\u201d he cautioned, citing the rise of cybercrime (\u201cYahoo Yahoo\u201d) among young Nigerians as a warning sign.<\/p>\n<p>Keshi urged Catholic media to become a beacon of hope by speaking truth to power, driving civic education, and campaigning for good governance, justice, and equity.<\/p>\n<p>He also emphasized the need for Catholic journalists and priests to be well-educated and professionally grounded to command respect in public discourse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Catholic media must not only communicate hope but also mobilize Nigerians to demand and work for change,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>He further challenged Catholic media to embrace technology and expand their reach beyond the Church in order to influence mainstream narratives and national development.<\/p>\n<p>In his wide-ranging address, Keshi lamented Nigeria\u2019s insecurity, corruption, unemployment, poor infrastructure, and leadership failures, saying they continue to fuel disillusionment among citizens and push young people into migration.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the challenges, the retired diplomat expressed optimism, insisting that Nigeria has the resources and human capital to transform into a prosperous nation if leaders focus on providing good governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gospel challenges us, and so does the opportunity.
