The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerian travellers to strictly adhere to the terms of their visas, warning that any form of violation, such as overstaying, could jeopardize future opportunities to enter the country.<\/p>\n
In a statement released Tuesday on its official X account, the Mission underscored the importance of compliance with U.S. immigration rules, stressing that visa misuse attracts serious consequences, including long-term travel restrictions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important to use your U.S. visa according to its terms. Misusing it, for example, by overstaying, may affect your ability to travel to the U.S. in the future,\u201d the advisory read.<\/p>\n
The warning comes amid heightened concerns about strict U.S. visa regulations and enforcement policies. Data from the U.S. Department of State revealed that more than 700,000 visa overstays were recorded globally in 2023, with Nigeria listed among the countries with high violation rates.<\/p>\n
Under the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, visa violators risk being barred from re-entry into the United States for years, depending on the severity of the violation.<\/p>\n
