{"id":74551,"date":"2025-08-30T11:26:37","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T11:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=74551"},"modified":"2025-08-30T11:26:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T11:26:37","slug":"resident-doctors-warn-of-fct-health-system-collapse-issue-strike-notice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/30\/resident-doctors-warn-of-fct-health-system-collapse-issue-strike-notice\/","title":{"rendered":"Resident Doctors Warn of FCT Health System Collapse, Issue Strike Notice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Sarah Sam Adda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCT), has warned that the health system in the FCT is on the brink of collapse due to acute manpower shortages, obsolete equipment, poor working conditions, and unpaid allowances.<\/p>\n<p>At its 3rd Quarter Ordinary General Meeting in Abuja on Thursday, ARD-FCT President, Dr. George Ebong, said doctors were overstretched, with some attending to as many as 60 patients overnight, while vital machines such as X-ray and dialysis equipment remained non-functional.<\/p>\n<p>He lamented that no major recruitment had been carried out since 2011, despite staff losses through retirement, death, and migration.<\/p>\n<p>The strain, he said, had driven some doctors to antidepressants, putting both patients and caregivers at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors issued a one-week ultimatum to the FCT Administration to address the crisis or face a week-long warning strike. They also decried unpaid salaries, delayed promotions, and underpayment of already promoted staff, accusing the government of misallocating funds to less urgent projects while neglecting critical healthcare needs.<\/p>\n<p>Responding, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment Secretariat, assured that reforms were underway.<\/p>\n<p>She announced that appointment letters for 60 house officers, 70 pharmacists, and 60 lab scientists would soon be issued.<\/p>\n<p>She also disclosed that outstanding allowances, improved health insurance, and better drug supply were being processed under the FCT Minister\u2019s directive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sarah Sam Adda &nbsp; The Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCT), has warned that the health system in the FCT is on the brink of collapse due to acute manpower shortages, obsolete equipment, poor working conditions, and unpaid allowances.
