{"id":74320,"date":"2025-08-27T09:24:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T09:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=74320"},"modified":"2025-08-27T09:24:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T09:24:08","slug":"amnesty-international-condemns-persecution-of-omoyele-sowore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/27\/amnesty-international-condemns-persecution-of-omoyele-sowore\/","title":{"rendered":"Amnesty International Condemns Persecution of Omoyele Sowore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onilede Titi Faith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International has condemned the Nigerian authorities for what it described as the relentless harassment and persecution of Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted on its X handle on Wednesday, the global rights organisation criticised the ongoing trial of Sowore on charges of terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraudulent activities, describing them as baseless and politically motivated attempts to silence him.<\/p>\n<p>The statement followed a recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja directing six banks to provide the police with details of accounts linked to Sowore and his companies as part of investigations into alleged terrorism funding and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International described the arraignment as another attempt to suppress civic freedoms in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuthorities must immediately drop all the charges against him and end the politically motivated investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Subjecting bank accounts linked to Sowore and Sahara Reporters to a purported investigation is part of a wider attempt to clamp down on civic space and peaceful dissent in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Filing additional charges and a fresh case against him is clearly aimed at targeting Sahara Reporters, which is an independent medium that upholds freedom of expression and the public interest,\u201d Amnesty International stated.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation further demanded that Nigerian authorities allow Sowore to freely exercise his rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International recalled that Sowore was declared a Prisoner of Conscience in November 2019 and has since endured arbitrary arrests, prolonged detentions, and other human rights violations for his peaceful activism in defence of human rights, social justice, and the rule of law in Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onilede Titi Faith &nbsp; Amnesty International has condemned the Nigerian authorities for what it described as the relentless harassment and persecution of Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters.
