The Peoples Democratic Party\u2019s (PDP), decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South and retain the national chairmanship in the North has vindicated the position of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Lere Olayinka, has said.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Monday night, Olayinka recalled that Wike and the G-5 governors had in 2022 insisted that the PDP should balance its leadership by zoning the presidency and chairmanship to different regions.<\/p>\n
Their call, he said, was ignored, leading to the party\u2019s loss in the 2023 elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow that the party has realised its mistake of not listening to Wike and the G-5, and has chosen to do what they demanded three years later, have they not been vindicated?\u201d Olayinka asked.<\/p>\n
He noted that Wike and his allies had opposed the decision to allow both Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate, and Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the then national chairman, to remain in office despite being from the North.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe aftermath was the electoral misfortune the party suffered in 2023, followed by instability after the elections,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
While welcoming the new zoning arrangement, Olayinka questioned its timing, warning that it may already be \u201ctoo late.\u201d<\/p>\n
At its National Executive Committee (NEC), meeting in Abuja on Monday, the PDP zoned the 2027 presidential ticket to the South while retaining the chairmanship in the North.<\/p>\n
The NEC also confirmed Umar Damagum as substantive national chairman.<\/p>\n
Damagum, who had been acting national chairman since March 2023 following Iyorchia Ayu\u2019s suspension, previously served as the PDP Deputy National Chairman (North).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
