{"id":74102,"date":"2025-08-25T06:53:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T06:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=74102"},"modified":"2025-08-25T06:53:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T06:53:10","slug":"january-july-2025-customs-confiscate-2-209-million-in-nigerian-airports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/25\/january-july-2025-customs-confiscate-2-209-million-in-nigerian-airports\/","title":{"rendered":"January, July 2025: Customs Confiscate $2.209 Million in Nigerian Airports\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has confiscated a total of $2.209 million in undeclared foreign currencies at major airports across the country between January and July 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The interceptions took place at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.<\/p>\n<p>One of the largest seizures occurred in March at Kano airport, where a passenger arriving from Saudi Arabia was caught with $1,154,900 and SR135,900 concealed in packs of palm dates.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect was arrested, and the funds were handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), leading to a court conviction and forfeiture to the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>That same month, Customs officers at Abuja airport intercepted $193,000 hidden in a carton of yoghurt from an inbound passenger from Jeddah.<\/p>\n<p>In Lagos, an inbound passenger from South Africa declared $279,000 but was found with an additional $299,000, bringing the undeclared total to $578,000.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Kano airport officials seized multiple currencies amounting to about \u20a6653.99 million, including $420,900, 3.95 million West African CFA francs, 224,000 Central African CFA francs, and \u20ac5,825, all from a passenger arriving from Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Around the same period, an outbound passenger at Lagos airport declared $6,000 but was discovered with $29,000.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the trend, Mr. Pius Ujubuonu of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents blamed policy gaps for encouraging non-declaration and urged government to review fiscal measures to promote compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Segun Musa, Deputy National President of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, said awareness campaigns remain weak and called for stronger public sensitization alongside thorough investigations of confiscated funds.<\/p>\n<p>The NCS has reiterated that all travelers must declare cash exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent, noting that declaration forms are readily available at airline counters in line with international financial regulations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has confiscated a total of $2.209 million in undeclared foreign currencies at major airports across the country between January and July 2025.
