{"id":74031,"date":"2025-08-24T17:47:33","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T17:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=74031"},"modified":"2025-08-24T17:47:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T17:47:33","slug":"ndpc-to-probe-data-breaches-in-key-economic-sectors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/24\/ndpc-to-probe-data-breaches-in-key-economic-sectors\/","title":{"rendered":"NDPC to Probe Data Breaches in Key Economic Sectors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has announced plans to launch a nationwide investigation into companies suspected of violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The probe will target organisations in banking, insurance, hospitality, pensions, gaming, and insurance brokerage to assess compliance with data protection requirements.<\/p>\n<p>A list of affected firms will be published in major national newspapers on Monday, August 25, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement signed by the Commission\u2019s Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations, Barrister Babatunde Bamigboye, the sector-wide investigation follows reports of suspected non-compliance with key provisions of the Act.<\/p>\n<p>Companies under scrutiny must, within 21 days, submit evidence of 2024 compliance audit returns, appointment of a Data Protection Officer, summaries of technical and organisational safeguards, and proof of registration as a Data Controller or Processor of Major Importance.<\/p>\n<p>Bamigboye warned that failure to comply could attract sanctions, including administrative fines, enforcement orders, or criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that the NDP Act, 2023, was enacted to protect citizens\u2019 data rights, strengthen Nigeria\u2019s digital economy, and align the nation\u2019s data governance framework with global standards.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission reiterated its commitment to fostering accountability, safeguarding data subjects, and building trust in Nigeria\u2019s data protection ecosystem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Onyeanya Ebere Immaculata &nbsp; The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has announced plans to launch a nationwide investigation into companies suspected of violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023.
