{"id":73913,"date":"2025-08-22T08:48:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T08:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=73913"},"modified":"2025-08-22T08:48:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T08:48:09","slug":"nigeria-deports-99-foreigners-over-crypto-romance-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/22\/nigeria-deports-99-foreigners-over-crypto-romance-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Deports 99 Foreigners Over Crypto Romance Scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Huldah Shado<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Government has deported 99 foreign nationals convicted of cybercrime-related offences, including romance and cryptocurrency scams.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the deportees comprised 60 Chinese, 39 Filipinos, and others convicted of \u201ccyber-terrorism and internet fraud.\u201d EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, said the move was part of intensified efforts to curb online fraud in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Since August 15, a total of 141 foreigners; 70 Chinese, 49 Filipinos, and two Kazakhs have been deported, with more expulsions expected in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>The latest deportees were among 792 suspected cybercriminals arrested in December during a large-scale operation on Victoria Island, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators said the suspects ran fraudulent investment schemes disguised as online romances, tricking victims into channeling money into fake cryptocurrency platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Many victims reportedly lost life savings, business capital, and borrowed funds to the schemes.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have warned that foreign cyber syndicates exploit Nigeria\u2019s weak cybersecurity systems to operate unhindered.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs released by the EFCC showed some of the deportees, mostly Asian men, wearing face masks as they queued at airport counters.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said its crackdown on cybercrime would continue to safeguard citizens and reduce financial losses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Huldah Shado &nbsp; The Federal Government has deported 99 foreign nationals convicted of cybercrime-related offences, including romance and cryptocurrency scams.
