The Federal Government of Nigeria has deactivated about 13,597,057 social media accounts for violating the national Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms. Platforms affected include TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n
Additionally, 58,909,112 offensive posts were removed following user complaints, with 754,629 submissions filed as grievances. Of these, 420,439 posts were reinstated after successful appeals.<\/p>\n
The takedowns were revealed in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, prepared by internet intermediaries such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).<\/p>\n
In a statement, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations at NITDA, commended the platforms for their cooperation.<\/p>\n
