{"id":73679,"date":"2025-08-20T06:59:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T06:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=73679"},"modified":"2025-08-20T06:59:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T06:59:16","slug":"5bn-abuja-lagos-superhighway-raises-funding-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/20\/5bn-abuja-lagos-superhighway-raises-funding-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"$5bn Abuja-Lagos Superhighway Raises Funding Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Olokuta Rofiat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contractors handling the proposed 470-kilometre Abuja-Lagos Greenfield superhighway have disclosed that the project will cost $5 billion, sparking concerns after earlier assurances that it would not require government funding.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, had previously maintained that the highway would be fully financed by a private sector consortium at no cost to the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that the road is designed for completion within four years, with a projected lifespan of 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kenny Martins, chairman of the consortium under AEC Unity Network Limited, confirmed that preliminary designs, studies, and approvals have been completed.<\/p>\n<p>He said regulatory clearance from the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), have already been secured.<\/p>\n<p>The $5bn superhighway is expected to cut travel time between Abuja and Lagos to just four hours.<\/p>\n<p>It will traverse nine states-Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory with extensions to Baro Port in Niger State to boost trade and logistics.<\/p>\n<p>According to Martins, financing structures are in place, and with regulatory approvals obtained, the project now awaits final clearance from the Ministry of Justice and the Federal Executive Council (FEC), before construction can commence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Olokuta Rofiat Contractors handling the proposed 470-kilometre Abuja-Lagos Greenfield superhighway have disclosed that the project will cost $5 billion, sparking concerns after earlier assurances that it would not require government funding.
