{"id":73384,"date":"2025-08-17T05:57:55","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T05:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=73384"},"modified":"2025-08-17T05:57:55","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T05:57:55","slug":"amac-seals-efab-metropolis-estate-traps-in-prominent-residents-for-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2025\/08\/17\/amac-seals-efab-metropolis-estate-traps-in-prominent-residents-for-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"AMAC Seals Efab Metropolis Estate, traps in prominent residents for hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Oso Abidemi\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tension gripped residents of Efab Metropolis Estate in Karsana, Abuja, on Friday after officials of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), sealed the estate over an alleged \u20a6600 million debt in unpaid tenement rates.<\/p>\n<p>The enforcement, which began around 8 a.m., saw AMAC officials and security operatives barricade the main gates, shutting in lawmakers, businessmen, and a retired Supreme Court Justice for several hours.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicles were prevented from going in or out, with movement restricted only to the pedestrian gate.<\/p>\n<p>The development sparked heated protests from residents and visitors, with the estate\u2019s facility manager confronting AMAC officials, insisting that court proceedings over the disputed rates had not been served.<\/p>\n<p>Calm was restored after private discussions between AMAC officials and some prominent residents, including a serving House of Representatives member and retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the talks, AMAC\u2019s Coordinator of Tenement Rate, Ambassador Dr. Alewa Akawu Nasiru, defended the council\u2019s action, stressing that enforcement was in line with constitutional provisions.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, noted that residents had appealed for more time to settle the outstanding rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are open to negotiation, but we also have a duty to enforce the law,\u201d he said, describing dispute resolution as key to achieving compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Galumje urged residents and developers to comply with legal obligations, warning that disobedience to court orders could not be condoned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis should serve as a lesson to others.
