Tagged “Effective Spectacle Coverage in Nigeria – Jigi Bola Phase II”, the project provides free screening and reading glasses to affected residents.

Programme Manager of the Eye Care Unit, FCT Public Health Department, Dr. Ehiemere Goodluck, explained that once beneficiaries are screened, they receive glasses tailored to their visual needs. The programme, which began in Abaji in March, has also covered AMAC and Bwari, with plans to reach all six area councils in the territory.

According to Dr. Goodluck, Bwari town, Dutse-Makaranta, and Dutse-Alhaji have already been served, while Mpape is next on the schedule. She urged residents who meet the criteria to take advantage of the free services.

Beneficiaries have expressed mixed reactions. While many lauded the government’s effort, some noted areas for improvement. Saadatu Mustapha commended the outreach but felt a more thorough examination, including checks for other eye or health conditions, should be included. She said her screening was limited to reading a text and trying on different glasses until she found a suitable pair.

For others like Thomas Auta, the project was a lifeline. “I have struggled to read for a long time and couldn’t afford glasses. This is a divine intervention,” he said. Similarly, Mary Peter thanked the organisers for making vision aid accessible to elderly residents, particularly those over 50.

The FCT rollout reflects the Federal Government’s broader commitment to improving eye health nationwide and ensuring that more Nigerians receive the vision support they need.

By Olokuta Rofiat Residents across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are benefitting from the Federal Government’s free eyeglass distribution programme aimed at combating presbyopia among adults aged 40 and above.
